Location and Moorage: King Harbor, Redondo Beach (33 50 829N, 118 24 022W); two nights at anchor (w\/ stern anchor)<\/p>\n
Upon leaving Newport, the sea was like glass \u2014 nary a stitch of wind, so Jody could practice her chords. But that didn\u2019t last. Once we passed through the first shipping lane, the wind piped up and of course it was coming from where we wanted to go, so it turned into another weather leg, under a single-reefed main with lots of spray over the bow (sheesh).<\/p>\n
Upon arrival, Jody got to cleaning the deck and Rand investigated potential sports bar opportunities where we could take in the NBA Finals. We watched Warriors get bashed in game 5 at a local haunt called the Pitcher House, where we also played some darts, ate some pizza and lots of tater tots.<\/p>\n
The next day, we wandered around a bit, saw some sights and bars that were closed, but also found a little joint called Catalina Coffee that was super comfy, complete with free wifi, couches, yummy pastries, but terrible coffee. We holed up there for a few hours while Rand worked and Jody chatted with Tannika, who was in France at the time.<\/p>\n
While this little harbor isn\u2019t very pretty (our view was the breakwater (i.e., rip-rap)), the harbor patrol guys were extremely hospitable and we enjoyed again acting as a mark, but this time for outrigger training.<\/p>\n
King Harbor \u2014 what did we learn about ourselves and\/or observations:<\/strong> Local hospitality makes a not-so-pretty harbor that much better. Using the handy billy to prevent chafe of the stern anchor line on the transom was a brilliant MacGyver move by Rand.<\/p>\n\n\t\t
