While the Omicron variant runs rampant through the BVI, with active cases over 1,000 for the first time since July 2021, there is a new push to limit the size of gatherings, get more people vaccinated, and ask everyone to do their part to limit transmission. The hope is that further restrictions on public places and businesses will not be necessary. Chances seem good that Omicron will move through the population quickly, and case numbers will drop after about six weeks, as in other countries so far.
The situation for chartering visitors to the BVI has not changed since November 16, 2021, when regulations were amended to allow fully-vaccinated travelers to move freely in the territory. A negative PCR or antigen test is required within 48 hours of arrival, as well as proof of an approved medical insurance policy. If your travel is delayed or for some other reason your arrival is delayed to beyond the 48 hour mark since your test, a new test will be required on arrival. Otherwise, you are good to go.
Unvaccinated and partially vaccinated travelers (those with only one of the two recommended doses of a two-part vaccine) must seek authorization for arrival via the BVI Gateway Portal, and test on arrival. For cruisers arriving at the BVI from other islands/countries:
The government and health office of the BVI strongly recommend all crew is fully vaccinated. Regardless, a negative Covid test from your departing country is required. If more than 48 hours passes before your arrival at the BVI, another rapid test will be required on your arrival. The only place for these tests in the BVI, and hence your only locations to clear in, are Road Town (ferry building) and West End/Soper’s Hole (ferry building).
Additionally, all vessels must register with SailClear before departing for the BVI. Documents uploaded to this clearinghouse include vaccination cards, negative test results, proof of medical insurance.
If all your crew is fully vaccinated, applying for entry via the BVI Gateway Portal is NOT required. For those who are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated, you will need to apply for pre-authorization, and expect to quarantine upon arrival for four up to 14 days, depending on test results.
